This project outlines the successful execution of a building, aimed at providing a cost-effective, durable, and hygienic home for a struggling family in Bangladesh. The beneficiaries of this project is a landless poor family of two members, a brilliant university student and his hardworking, struggling mother. They have been living from hand to mouth for years now. The catalyst for this initiative was the heartwarming narrative of the struggling family, as portrayed on the “Branding Bangladesh” show. Touched by their story, a group of Bangladeshi emigrant in Australia decided to take action and contribute to their well-being. They brought a piece of land and financed the whole project. The financial support provided by this compassionate group has enabled the realization of this essential house project
To ensure the successful design and construction of the project, the initiators and donors engaged HBRC for both design and construction aspects. The decision to consult HBRC was driven by their expertise in creating sustainable and cost-effective housing solutions. The collaboration aimed to deliver a home that not only met the basic needs of the family but also promoted durability, hygiene, and comfort.
With the goal of constructing the project using environmentally friendly alternatives, HBRC opted for sustainable building materials, hollow concrete blocks and ferrocement, consciously avoiding potentially harmful materials like fired bricks. During the design phase, the main consideration was to provide easy accessibility to specially abled people. A ramp was provided in this regard. Additionally, natural ventilation and an abundance of light and air within the structure was properly ensured. Moreover, the project site featured an old litchi tree, and careful measures were taken to position the house in a manner that safeguarded the tree from any harm during construction.
The building’s roof, crafted from ferrocement, emerged as a choice due to its lightweight, durable, and eco-friendly properties. The roof was strategically designed in a vaulted shape to serve multiple purposes, including providing increased headroom for storage and a water tank, controlling temperatures, and, most importantly, creating a spacious and airy ambiance.
A Tube well was installed in the front courtyard to facilitate the water supply to the overhead tank, ensuring a steady provision of water for both kitchen and toilet usage.
Apart from technical and design support, HBRC is dedicated to extending financial assistance for the maintenance and future enhancements of this project. As part of HBRC’s forthcoming initiatives, there is a plan to construct an aesthetically pleasing boundary wall, primarily aimed at enhancing safety measures. The commitment from HBRC extends beyond the initial construction phase, ensuring comprehensive and sustained approach to the project’s well-being.
